9 Best Sightseeing Sights in Sydney

9 Best Sightseeing Sights in Sydney | Experience AustraliaSydney Opera House

Sun, surfers and sea: The Australian metropolis of Sydney, capital of New South Wales, is simply stunning. With white beaches right on its doorstep, it is one of the most exciting cities in the world. Read here about the sights in Sydney that you shouldn’t miss.

Australia’s unofficial capital is one of the few cities in the world that still has its own sense of calm despite its business districts and tourism. Perhaps it’s because Australians love Sydney so much, or perhaps it’s because of the many cultures that come together here that Sydney has such a relaxed atmosphere. Look at the city’s sights during the day and enjoy the sunset over the Pacific in a restaurant right on the beach in the evening.

Sydney Opera House

Sydney’s number one attraction is the Opera House in Sydney Bay. You’ve probably seen the pictures of exciting New Year’s Eve parties. Every year it attracts thousands of visitors to the Opera House to celebrate the New Year together as one of the first countries in the world. The Opera House was built by the Danish architect Jørn Utzon. After the construction of the Opera House became far too expensive and exceeded the planned costs by 15 times, Utzon left the country because he could no longer pay his employees. In 2008, Utzon died without ever having seen or set foot in his life’s work. I have dedicated an entire article to this impressive building, so take a look and find out more about the Sydney Opera House.

Royal Botanical GardensBotanical Gardens Sydney

While you’re in the harbour, you should take a detour to the Botanical Gardens, which are located right next to the Opera House at Farm Cove. Originally, where the Botanical Gardens are today, there was the very first farm in Sydney. The agriculture carried out there made the soil increasingly fertile, and today, there is space for a rose garden, various desert plants and the Calyx exhibition building. Many changing flower shows are held here, and there is a café where you can enjoy snacks, coffee and even high tea arrangements. There are also many events and workshops throughout the year where you can learn more about the plant life in the gardens. Free guided tours take place in the Botanical Gardens every day. By the way: The last scene in the film Matrix Revolutions was filmed in the Botanical Gardens.

Sydney Harbour Bridgeharbour bridge

The harbour bridge is also called the “coathanger” and, as the name suggests, is located in the harbour. The bridge connects the city centre with the business districts in the north of Sydney and is also one of Sydney’s most popular attractions. Walking across the bridge, you can view the entire harbour, Circular Quay and the Opera House.

If you have more time and courage, you can climb along the bridge arch. You should allow yourself about 3-4 hours for this. If you are not quite so adventurous but still want a great view, you can also climb the viewing platform on the southeast pillar. Every year, there is a huge fireworks display on the bridge, and Sydney is world-famous for this. My personal tip: you don’t necessarily have to be right next to the Opera House to see the fireworks. Drive over the bridge to Bradleys Head Park near Taronga Zoo. There you have a perfect view of the entire bridge and don’t have to weave your way through many other visitors.

Surry Hills MarketSurry Hills Market is in Sydney

Portobello Market is in London, and Surry Hills Market is in Sydney. The market is a little paradise for all vintage lovers. On the first Saturday of every month, you can find delicious food, small antique treasures and second-hand clothing here. Many young (still unknown) designers also have a stand here and sell their pieces. And if you pass by the “Jam Bandits” jam stand, try the salted caramel!

Taronga ZooTaronga Zoo

If you want to pet kangaroos and wombats, visit Taronga Zoo. “Taronga” comes from the Aborigines and means “beautiful view”. And you will definitely have that in this zoo! From the zoo’s pier for ferries and boats, you have a wonderful view of the entire harbour with the opera house and bridge. From Circular Quay, you can take a ferry directly to the zoo and watch over 2,600 animals – the cute koalas are already waiting for you.

Guru tip: If you want to add a special experience to your bucket list, I recommend an overnight stay at the Wildlife Retreat at Taronga Zoo. You’ll stay right in the middle of koalas, platypuses and cute echidnas. You can take part in guided tours before making yourself comfortable in the modern, glass-walled accommodation. If you’re more into glamping, luxurious safari tents are available where you can listen to the sounds of the zoo animals while lying in cozy beds.

Sydney Tower EyeSydney Tower Eye

You’ll find the imposing Sydney Tower Eye in the middle of Sydney’s CBD (Central Business District). Drive to the Westfield shopping centre; an elevator will take you to the observation deck, 250 meters up, in 40 seconds. Once you’re at the top, you’ll have a wonderful view of Sydney. If you’re looking for a little more adrenaline, the Skywalk is just the thing for you. In 60 minutes, you’ll walk along the Skywalk on a guided and well-secured tour and enjoy the views of the city. Just make sure you arrive 45 minutes before your booked time to prepare.

Surfers Paradise – Bondi BeachBondi Beach

The most famous beach in Sydney, if not in all of Australia, is undoubtedly Bondi Beach. Australians flock here every day to sunbathe or do their morning workout. Bondi Beach is also very popular with water sports enthusiasts as it offers perfect conditions for surfing. You shouldn’t miss out on surfing here yourself! Numerous surf schools near the beach will help you master the waves perfectly. But if you’re uncomfortable with all of this, you can just watch the pros: seeing and being seen applies here too. I hope you have fun, no matter which option you choose.

One of Sydney’s most beautiful hiking trails is the Bondi-Coogee Coastal Walk (duration approx. 2 hours). Take the bus from the city centre directly to Bondi Beach. From there, head south to Tamarama and Bronte Beach. After another two kilometres, you will arrive at Clovelly Beach. If you need a short break, you can relax in bars and cafes and enjoy the beautiful coastal landscape. The last part of the hike takes you to Coogee Beach. From here, you can take buses back to Sydney city centre.

If you’re ever at Bondi Beach, you shouldn’t miss visiting the world-famous Bondi Icebergs seawater pool. The view of the snow-white bay and the waves crashing over the edge into the turquoise water are simply unique!

King’s CrossThe Kings Cross

The Kings Cross district is well-known among backpackers. If you like to party all night long, Kings Cross is the place to be. There are numerous hostels, bars and clubs here, so you can be sure to meet party-goers at any time of day or night. Almost all hostels in Kings Cross are party hostels, so you can usually save yourself the entrance fee to expensive bars and clubs.

Blue Mountains National Parkthe Blue Mountains

Those with a little more time to spend in Sydney should take a day trip to the Blue Mountains. You can easily take the train from Sydney to Katoomba (takes about 2 hours) or book a rental car. I recommend that you travel by car, so you can see even more of Australia’s beautiful landscape! The national park consists of eucalyptus forests, where it gets its name: the eucalyptus trees evaporate essential oils. This mist makes the mountains appear bluish from a distance. The valley looks particularly blue in the morning, so it’s worth getting up early! In the national park, you can go on various hikes, all of which are well-developed and take you to the most beautiful places in the park. If you can’t decide which path to take, take the Prince Henry Cliff Walk (length: 6.8 km, duration: about 3.5 hours) to see the famous rock formation “The Three Sisters” up close.
