Itinerary Great Ocean Road Trip
Upon departure from Melbourne, we venture towards the Surf Coast, travelling through charming coastal villages like Anglesea, Lorne, and Airey’s Inlet. We pause en route for some morning refreshments and to inhale the refreshing sea breeze while observing surfers in the ocean. Considering its closeness to Antarctica, you’ll discover why this area is renowned for surfing and the necessity for wet suits!
Pause at the Magnificent Ocean Route monument, which signifies the historic commencement of the Magnificent Ocean Route. Following some photography at the famed Commemorative Archway and an informative discussion about the soldiers who constructed this route to honour their lost comrades, we’ll continue through more breathtaking vistas (naturally, halting for snapshots!)
Throughout our trip, we’ll make stops to search for Koalas along the Magnificent Ocean Route, dwelling in the wilderness. As their presence is natural, we can’t assure their exact location, but our experienced guides are familiar with the prime areas to venture into the wilderness and spot them resting!
We are still on the Great Ocean Road, heading into the lush green hills of the Great Otway National Park. We drive past towering Eucalyptus trees until we reach a Cool, Temperate Rainforest patch. The scenery changes dramatically as we walk among the tree ferns and marvel at the ‘ancient relics’ Myrtle Beach trees. These trees provide perfect canopy shade from when Australia was part of a supercontinent called Gondwanaland. Please breathe deep, fresh air before we drive to the dramatic Shipwreck Coast.
A lunch break is available in Apollo Bay (approximately 45 minutes), where guests can explore the area, purchase souvenirs, or enjoy ice cream. Afterwards, the bus will continue to the Great Otway National Park inland.
After leaving the forest and returning to the Southern Ocean, we reach Port Campbell National Park, known for the iconic 12 Apostles. Visitors will have approximately 40 minutes to explore the Apostles, allowing them to appreciate the views, stroll along the boardwalks, and capture picturesque moments of this untamed and rough coastline.
After a full day of exploring, we concluded our journey along the Great Ocean Road and began our return to Melbourne via country roads. Along the way, we will pass through farmlands and arrive in the country town of Colac. For those interested, there will be an opportunity to have dinner at your own expense before we arrive in Melbourne at approximately 8:30 pm.
